Helping Combat Identity Theft and Related Fraud

My name is Jim G. George and I have spent much of my professional career as a consultant helping banks with fraud reduction efforts and fraud investigations.  A while back I was asked to make a presentation on identity theft.  It was well received, leading to a lively discussion and resulted in more such requests.

Because there is a growing need and interest in the subject I decided to present a telephone-based version of the speech (Tele-class) on the subject.  As time allows, I encourage discussion.  I have also put together a book you can download and have provided some free references and materials on this site.

  • "Why Care", below, gives some facts as to the nature of ID Theft and its potential impact on you.
  • "Resources", provides a variety of tools you can use.  Some are free, others are sold at very reasonable prices.
  • "Companies", advises employers and banks as to some of the things they can do

Why Care

Millions of Americans have been victims of Identity Theft and millions more will be in the future.  Both the Federal Trade Commission and the FBI report that it is the fastest growing crime in the country.

What can happen to you includes:

·         You may pay bills you do not owe.

·         Your deposit account may be stripped of funds.

·         Collection efforts may be made against you.

·         Your credit record may be damaged.

·         You may have to spend time and money recovering your good name.

·         The ID thief may even give your name when arrested, giving “you” a criminal record or even warrants for your arrest!

There are three basic forms of ID related fraud:

·         Unauthorized transactions – Identity tokens are use to transact against your accounts.  These include your PIN, on-line password, signature, plastic card, checks, deposit slips, or data.

·         Account Takeover – The address is changed on your statements and the fraudster takes over your account.

·         New Accounts – Accounts are set up under your name.  These may be loans, cards, or deposit accounts that get linked into your existing accounts (setting up future inter-account transfers)

How do they get your ID?

·         Steal – your wallet, your mail, and even your trash.

·         Copy – data from work records, school records, your checks, computer systems and files, or documents in your home.

·         Trick – call or e-mail you with stories designed to get you to give them personal data they can use.

·         Purchase – There is an active black-market for personal data, wallet contents, and stolen mail.

But if you follow sound practices you can reduce the chances you will be hit with ID theft and minimize its impact on your life if it does happen to you.  This site is intended to help you accomplish that by providing useful tools.

The Workbook

To help you, I have written a very usable workbook which you can download:   Combating ID Theft - Tools to Avoid it, Discover it, Recover from it

  • This is a 40 page book which can be downloaded in printable Adobe Acrobat format (a .PDF file).  If you don’t have an Acrobat file reader you can get one free from www.Adobe.com
  • I am working on having printed copies available to you, but they will cost more than this “soft” version.  If you are interested in that, please let me know.  It is a bit too small for book publishers but much larger than a brochure.
  • I am charging $10.00 for the download and ask that you not make share copies without permission, as any author would.  I have seen other authors charging over $20 for a smaller downloadable book but I am not really trying to make a living doing this, just trying to educate people and cover the expenses and time required.

PayPal will accept most charge cards.  Just click where you indicate "Don't have one" and a card entry screen will appear.
